Tugboat Lubrication

Reliability
On 01 January 2020, upon the entry into force of the new IMO standards for
vessels operating outside ECA* areas, the admissible global limit of fuel sulphur
content was reduced from 3.5% to 0.5%, which still permits the use of
high-sulphur content fuels (HSFO) provided sulphur catchment systems
(scrubbers) are used to ensure equivalent SOx emissions into the atmosphere.
The admissible sulphur limit remains at 0.1% in ECA areas.
As such, the fuel sulphur content for tugboats, in accordance with the area in
which they operate, will be limited to amounts lower than 0.5%, or even lower
than 0.1%, and the lubricants used to oil their engines will be adapted to each type
of fuel used.
This brochure provides details of the most suitable type of lubricant for each
vessel, in accordance with the type of engine to be oiled and the fuel used.
The lubricants used will need to be adapted to the specifications and
requirements of the engine manufacturer. For more information, visit our website

Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), that is, the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the North
American area and the US Caribbean area.
